Seven Potato, more?!

July 5, 2011 by jenni

Ah, yes, the “counting-OUT” game that many of us played during our childhood years.  The desperation to be included in this circle of fists would cause me to yell, “Wait–best out of three” or “Let’s do it again and use our feet, too”!  The agonizing thought of being “it” in a game of tag or hide ‘n seek was just, well, simply unbearable.

One potato, two potato
Three potato, four,
Five potato, six potato,
Seven potato, more?

So, seeing that I am an analogy-type-of person who thrives on symbolism and metaphors, I thought it would be particularly interesting to look at this silly rhyme.  The first thought that pops into my mind is that we now have six in our family, but this rhyme ends with the statement, “Seven potato, more”.  Of course, this last line really should end with a gigantic red question mark because even though we’ve only been back for six weeks, many have asked us, “When are you adopting again?” I have no idea what the Lord has in store for us, but I do know that He has blessed us with Joelle for a reason–to LOVE on her and teach her about God’s saving grace.  And so, here are some of the things Joelle has been working on  . . .
1.  She can sing her ABC song and can repeat alternating letters.
2.  She can identify colors such as blue, red, and purple--mom’s favorite color!
3.  She hums many nursery rhymes put to music.  (i.e. “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep”, “Twinkle Little Star”).
4.  She can do hand motions to  “Paddy Cake” and “Jesus Loves Me”.
5.  Along with mommy, Joelle can sing “Jesus Loves the Little Children”, “Jesus Loves Me”, and “Savior, You can Move a Mountain”.
6.  She loves saying “Yonah” (her brother’s name: Jonah) , “Julee” (her sister’s name: Juliese), and has mastered the word “Mommy” for both Jeff and I (I am thinking about buying a blond wig for Jeff-hee hee.)
AND . . .
7.  She LOVES her Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head collection!  She has learned ears, nose, eyes, hat, and the earrings!
So, as far as, that silly counting rhyme, here’s how I’ve broken it down for now:
One potato, two potato (Jeff and Jenni fell in love and married.)
Thee potato, four, (They had two boy blessings: Jake & Jonah).
Five potato, six potato (Then, they had two adoption blessings: Juliese & Joelle).
Seven potato, more? (The ultimate blessing–”more” of the Lord in our family!).

Sons (Daughters, too!) are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. (Psalms 127:3)
